Karnataka — What began as a day of leisure turned devastating when seven people were swept away by a powerful current near the Markonahalli Dam in Tumakuru district on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V., a group of around 15 picnickers had gathered near the dam to enjoy the holiday. Without warning, the dam’s siphon system released water, creating a sudden surge that pulled seven people — including women and children — downstream.
Emergency teams from the police and fire department rushed to the scene. One man, identified as Nawaz, was rescued and taken to Adichunchanagiri Hospital for treatment.
Police said two bodies have been recovered so far, while search operations are underway to locate the remaining four missing individuals. The operation was briefly suspended at night and is expected to continue early Wednesday.
Superintendent Ashok K.V. confirmed that all the missing victims, except the rescued man, are women and girls.
Officials at the dam explained that the siphon likely activated due to a sudden natural rise in water levels, though a full investigation will be carried out to determine the cause.
The recovered bodies have been moved to Adichunchanagiri Hospital for post-mortem examination and formal identification.
Authorities have cautioned the public against entering restricted areas near dams, especially during the monsoon season, when unexpected water releases pose serious risks.
