Hamas Pushes for Release of Prominent Palestinian Leaders in Ceasefire Negotiations

By Orlin Milinov

CAIRO — Hamas has reportedly demanded the release of prominent Palestinian figures, including Marwan Barghouti, as part of the ongoing negotiations with Israel for a potential ceasefire and prisoner exchange, according to Egyptian state-linked media.

Al-Qahera News, a media outlet close to Egypt’s intelligence services, revealed that discussions have commenced in Sharm El-Sheikh, focusing on the list of Palestinian inmates Israel may release under the emerging peace framework.

Barghouti, a senior Fatah leader who has been imprisoned in Israel since 2002, remains one of the most influential figures in Palestinian politics. His inclusion in Hamas’ demands highlights the group’s focus on securing the freedom of key political and militant leaders.

Other prominent prisoners reportedly being considered for release include Ahmad Saadat, Hassan Salameh, and Abbas Al-Sayed — all long-serving detainees seen as symbolic figures in the Palestinian cause.

Ceasefire Plan Under U.S.-Backed Mediation

The indirect negotiations, which began on Monday, are part of a 20-point ceasefire proposal spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The plan seeks to secure the release of hostages captured by Hamas and other militant factions during the October 7, 2023 attacks, which triggered the latest Gaza war.

In exchange, Israel is expected to release around 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and more than 1,700 detainees from Gaza arrested during the conflict.

The proposal also outlines a phased Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the eventual disarmament of Hamas, paving the way for broader peace efforts and humanitarian access.

Hamas Expresses Readiness for Agreement

On Sunday, Hamas announced its readiness to reach a comprehensive deal to end hostilities in Gaza, emphasizing its willingness to implement an immediate exchange of hostages and prisoners with Israel.

Egyptian and American officials, alongside mediators from Qatar, are expected to play crucial roles in facilitating the agreement, which observers believe could be a significant step toward stabilizing the region after months of intense fighting.

As the talks continue in Sharm El-Sheikh, international attention remains focused on whether both sides can bridge deep-seated mistrust and deliver a lasting ceasefire.
