Abiodun Defends Ogun Airport, Says Project Reflects Longstanding Vision

…As ValueJet Launches Commercial Flights

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has defended his administration’s decision to construct the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in the Ilisan-Iperu axis, describing it as a continuation of the long-term vision laid down by previous administrations and a key driver of the state’s economic development.

Speaking on Tuesday during the official launch of commercial flight operations at the airport, Abiodun said the project’s success was a testament to his government’s commitment, focus, and adherence to continuity in governance.

The governor recalled that the idea for the airport was conceived by past administrations, who had identified the location as the most strategic for such a development due to its central position within the state.

“This location was carefully selected by my predecessors because they understood its economic and geographic importance. When we came into office, we found that the area had been neglected and turned into a dump site. But today, through dedication and divine guidance, it has been transformed into one of the fastest-constructed airports in Nigeria,” Abiodun said.

He noted that the airport project, which commenced in 2021 and recorded its first aircraft landing in February 2023, has now reached full operational capacity with the commencement of commercial flights by ValueJet.

The inaugural ValueJet flight, operated on a CRJ-900 aircraft with flight number 5N-BXR, departed the Gateway International Airport at 10:07 a.m. and landed safely at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 11:03 a.m.

Abiodun emphasized that the airport was never intended to serve only private interests but to promote commercial aviation, passenger movement, and cargo operations within and beyond Ogun State.

“We have been deliberate and diligent in our approach. Every aspect of this project — from design to execution — was handled with precision and care. Our cargo warehouse is already in place, and we have purpose-built offices and accommodation for all law enforcement and regulatory agencies to ensure security and operational efficiency,” the governor added.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, who spoke during the event, commended the Ogun State Government for achieving the feat in record time, describing it as a model for other states to emulate.

“This airport project stands out as one of the fastest executed in Nigeria. The governor began in 2021, and today we are witnessing commercial flight operations. As regulators, we ensured every step met the highest aviation standards. Ogun State has shown what is possible when leadership is focused and results-driven,” Najomo stated.

He urged other state governments planning to embark on similar projects to study the Ogun model and ensure full compliance with aviation regulations.

The commencement of ValueJet’s operations marks a new milestone for Ogun State, positioning it as an emerging hub for business, logistics, and tourism in the Southwest region.
