Pandemonium as Fire Razes Part of Rivers Secretariat

By Orlin Milinov

There was tension at the Rivers State Secretariat Complex, Port Harcourt, on Monday, following a fire outbreak that sent civil servants and visitors scampering for safety.

The incident, which occurred at the ground floor of the Podium Block, caused panic across the secretariat as thick smoke was seen billowing from one of the offices.

Confirming the incident, the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyingi Brown, said there were no casualties recorded during the fire.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, Dr. Brown explained that upon receiving reports of the fire, the Rivers State Fire Service and other emergency agencies were immediately contacted to contain the situation.

“We were informed that there was a fire incident at the right wing, ground floor of Podium Block. We immediately called the Rivers State Fire Service, and they responded promptly,” she said.

She noted that the Federal Fire Service, Renaissance Fire Team, and even the military fire unit joined in putting out the fire.

“It was a combined effort, and as you can see, the fire has been contained. We thank God and His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for his proactive investment in reviving the Fire Service. Without that, the situation could have been worse,” she added.

Dr. Brown stated that while no lives were lost, the state’s medical team was on standby to manage any potential emergencies.

She disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault.

“We urge all civil servants to take responsibility for safety — switch off sockets, lights, and unplug appliances to avoid residual charges. These are heritage buildings, and we must protect them,” she warned.

The Head of Service further assured that the state government is already working on plans to refurbish the affected offices and strengthen safety measures across the secretariat.

“Governor Fubara has directed that the damaged sections be rehabilitated. The details of the refurbishment will be made public soon,” she said.

As of press time, normal activities were gradually resuming, while officials assessed the extent of damage.
